The College of Communication and Information will host its ninth annual Diversity and Inclusion Week September 24 – 27. Alison Bethel McKenzie, executive director of the Society of Professional Journalists is this year's keynote speaker.
The keynote will bedelivered Monday, September 24 in the Communications Building’s Patrick Auditorium. A reception will be held at 4:30 p.m. with the keynote from 5:00 to 6:00 p.m.
McKenzie is a veteran journalist and educator. She spent a year in Accra, Ghana (2008-2009), for the Washington, DC-based International Center for Journalists, as a Knight International Journalism Fellow, helping Ghanaian journalists improve their reporting skills in the run-up to the 2008 presidential election; and a year in Bangalore, India (2016-2017) as a visiting professor of print and investigative journalism.
From 2009-2015, she served as the executive director of the International Press Institute in Vienna, Austria. McKenzie is a co-founder and former vice president of the board of directors for Media Institute of the Caribbean. She is a former board member of AlJazeera America (NY) and a member and former board member of the National Press Club in Washington, DC.
The theme for this year’s sessions is “Let’s Talk: Listen, Learn and Lead.” Topics for the nine sessions will be: Search Engines, Artificial Intelligence and Personal Identity; #Movement: Social Media and Change; Politics and Civil Discourse; Immigration: Capturing the Dream; Open Forum on Technology Use and Civility; Coping with Life Issues; Marginalized Populations and the Justice System; Cultural Appropriation vs. Appreciation; and What Would You Do?
The week will culminate with an all-campus barbecue featuring games, a photo booth, live music, international dance and cultural performances. CCI student organizations will host special activities at the festival.
