UT Senior Studies Journalism in Germany, Learns Value of Slower Pace

UT Senior- Germany

Eric Gedenk went to Germany to study post-WWII press systems, but came home having learned something else, too: There’s value in slowing down and appreciating the small things in life. Gedenk, of Chicago, Illinois, is a senior pursuing a double major in German and journalism and electronic media. He was in Germany from May 8 to May 26. Gedenk got the traveling bug his freshman year after he stumbled onto the opportunity to study abroad in Prague, Czech Republic. So this past spring, when his German professor, Maria Stehle, announced an interdisciplinary course about Berlin culminating with a trip at the end of the semester, Gedenk e-mailed her back that same day.

UT Professor Receives National Honor for Book on Hate Speech

Communication of HateA scholarly book on hate speech co-written by John Haas, associate professor and director of the UT Knoxville School of Communication Studies, has been recognized by the National Communication Association (NCA).

The Communication of Hate, co-written by Haas and Michael Waltman of the University of North Carolina, has won the NCA's Franklyn S. Haiman Award for Distinguished Scholarship in Freedom of Expression.

"My goal in writing the book was to provide a tool to mitigate the damage caused by hate speech and provide helpful strategies for overcoming its often devastating effects," said Haas.
