WUTK Rocks Annual Metro Pulse Best of Knoxville Poll

in

For the second year in a row, student radio station 90.3 "The Rock" WUTK-FM has been voted Best Radio Station in the Metro Pulse Best of Knoxville Readers Poll.

"It is a major validation for the station and for what we are doing here," said Benny Smith, WUTK-FM general manager. "It is very exciting and the students are very pumped about it, too."

Smith also took home an award. He was a runner-up for the news weekly's Unsung Hero Award.

The Funhouse team of Derek and Rob was a runner-up for Best Radio Personality. The radio show, which features a variety of music, airs 8-10 p.m. on Fridays.

The Metro Pulse had nothing but praise for the station in its write-up, saying "WUTK has returned to the ranks of truly great college radio stations under station manager Smith's guiding hand and savvy but innovative programming instincts."

In addition to the Metro Pulse award, WUTK-FM was one of five colleges radio stations nominated for the Biggest Improvement Award as part of this year's College Music Journal Awards.

The Metro Pulse is an alternative weekly that covers the Knoxville area. This is the 14th year the publication has sponsored its "Best of Knoxville" reader poll.

WUTK-FM is an independent, educational, non-commercial college radio station owned by the university and operated by the School of Journalism and Electronic Media. All music, news and sports shows are student produced.

The station broadcasts at 1,000 watts and has a broadcast range of about 30 miles. WUTK-FM can also be heard on the Web at http://www.wutkradio.com/.
