--Chancellor recognizes CCI students and faculty member at annual honors banquet

COMMUNICATION STUDIES
--CS students learn about career opportunities during Washington, D.C. visit
The School of Communication Studies sponsored a trip to Washington, D.C. in March for 12 undergraduate and graduate students to meet with leaders in government and industry. The group met with representatives from The Washington Post, Toyota North American Government Relations, Microsoft Government Relations, the FBI, Dames & Moore Group, Retail Industry Leaders Association, and U.S. Rep. John J. Duncan Jr. to discuss career opportunities for communication studies majors. The group also visited the White House and the Smithsonian Institution. --Students meet with NATO officials over spring break
Ken Levine led seven students in a study abroad program to Paris over spring break. The students met with business leaders and officials from NATO to examine organizational communication across cultures. For additional information, contact Ken Levine at klevine(at)utk.edu.
--Conference session focuses on faculty members' work
Seven faculty and graduate students (Lu Tang, Mike Kotowski, John Haas, Ken Levine, Bob Ambler, Linda Jurczak, and Justin Davis) presented their work at the 78th annual meeting of the Southern States Communication Association in Savannah, Ga. A special spotlight session at the convention was dedicated to the research of Lu Tang and Mike Kotowski.
--Doctoral student's analysis of post-Katrina news coverage to be published
Justin Davis, a PhD student, had his manuscript, "Blaming Victims and Survivors: An Analysis of Post-Katrina News Coverage," accepted for publication in the special issue on hurricanes and crisis in the Southern Communication Journal.
--Lambda Pi Eta initiation set for April 22
The School of Communication Studies will induct 23 students into Lambda Pi Eta at 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday, April 22 at the University Center. Lambda Pi Eta is the national honor society for communication students sponsored by the National Communication Association.

JOURNALISM AND ELECTRONIC MEDIA
--Tennessee Journalist wins regional Mark of Excellence Awards
The Tennessee Journalist, the online news site of the School of Journalism and Electronic Media, recently earned several honors at the 2007 Region 12 Mark of Excellence Awards presented by the Society of Professional Journalists. The publication won several first place awards for reporting, feature writing, and opinion and commentary. In addition, TNJN.com was named best all-around independent online student publication. --JEM faculty members and students present research at annual Broadcast Education Association Conference
Several JEM faculty members and students will present their research at the annual Broadcast Education Association Conference. The conference will be held April 16-19 in Las Vegas. Conference presentations and authors include
- "Rating Offensive Words in Three Television Program Contexts," Barry Sapolsky, Dan Shafter (Florida State), and Barb Kaye. (Awarded second place by BEA's research division.)
- "How the Embedded Media Are Perceived by Combat Troops Preparing to Deploy for the Iraq," PhD candidate Charlie Gee and Jeanine Kabrich. (Top paper, debut category, news division.)
- "Tell Me a Story: Using Blogs to Hear the Voice of the ‘Other,'" Naeemah Clark. Clark will moderate a panel, "Diversity in the New Media Environment."
- "Mediated Medicine: Websites and African-American Healthcare," doctoral candidate Cheryl Lambert.
- "Observed Differences between Male and Female Student Reactions to Diversity Issues in a Classroom Setting," Catherine Luther.
--Bates to present research at ASIS&T conference
Ben Bates will present "Transforming Information Markets: Implications of the Digital Network Economy" at ASIS&T 2008, the annual meeting of the American Society for Information Science and Technology. The meeting will be held in Columbus, Ohio, in October.

--Diversity Student Leaders Program presents expo
The CCI Diversity Student Leaders Program (DSLP) will present its inaugural Expo Exhibit from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., Thursday, April 17 in the third-floor lobby of the Communications Building. The purpose of the Expo Exhibit is to introduce this exciting new CCI program to CCI students, faculty, and staff, including its mission, goals, and upcoming events. DSLP students will be available to answer questions regarding how to participate in the program. Snacks will be provided.
--Graduating seniors, be a part of the CCI commencement slideshow
Graduating seniors, if you would like to have your memories of UT included in the CCI pre-commencement slideshow, e-mail your photos to April Moore at amoore9(at)utk.edu. The presentation will play for family and friends immediately before the ceremony begins.

Registration is now open for eligible students who wish to participate in the College of Communication and Information Spring/Summer 2008 Commencement Ceremony. Students must RSVP online by Friday, April 25. The event will be held at 2 p.m. on Friday, May 9, in the Knoxville Convention Center.
