in

Twelve students and one faculty member from the College of Communication and Information were honored at the annual University of Tennessee Chancellor's Honors Banquet, held Wednesday, April 8 at the Carolyn P. Brown Memorial University Center.

The chancellor's banquet is the largest UT honors event of the year. Interim Chancellor Jan Simek saluted the accomplishments of students, faculty, staff and friends of the University of Tennessee for their extraordinary achievements.

Congratulations to the CCI students and faculty member on winning the following awards.

Torchbearer

Torchbearer is the highest honor the university gives to its students. Recognition as a Torchbearer reminds all students that those who bear the Torch of Enlightenment shadow themselves to give light to others.

Blake Adam Brown is a journalism and electronic media major from Athens, Tenn. He has served in a variety of leadership roles, including chairman of the Senior Gift Challenge, UT Ambassador, orientation leader, president of the Mortar Board Honor Society, secretary and 2007 Member of the Year for the Student Alumni Associates, trip leader for alternative fall break, and member of the Mayor's Advisory Board, All Campus Events and the Provost's Student Retention Panel. His leadership and academic excellence have earned him numerous awards, including the African American Achiever Scholar, the Claude Tomlinson Scholarship, the Johnson Control Foundation Scholarship and the Vic Davis/Earl Zwingle Scholarship.

Extraordinary Campus Leadership and Service

Stephanie Bada is a senior in public relations from Germantown, Tenn. She has made a significant contribution to her peers and the campus community. She serves in leadership roles within Kappa Delta sorority, the Senior Gift Committee, Mortar Board and the Central Program Council's All Campus Events, where she serves as director's chair and is responsible for planning Homecoming Week, Carnicus, All Sing and Volunteer Challenge. One of Bada's most meaningful contributions is the founding of the Diabetes Advocacy Board, a student organization which raises awareness of diabetes at UT, fosters relationships among diabetic students and raises money for diabetes research. In addition to her extracurricular activities, she has excelled in the classroom and has been accepted to several law schools, including the UT College of Law.

LGBT Ally Research Award

This award recognizes outstanding research, publications and/or scholarship that focuses on lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender populations, or advances knowledge of LGBT issues.

Bharat Mehra, assistant professor in the School of Information Sciences, has focused his research on creating awareness of the needs of minority, disenfranchised and international populations, with much of this concentrated on the LGBT community. He also provided valuable assistance in preparing a report to the chancellor, which was integral to the decision to include sexual orientation and gender identity in UT's nondiscrimination clause. His work has had a lasting impact on the LGBT campus community.
