--Mehra facilitates Watauga Regional Library strategic planning session
Bharat Mehra facilitated the strategic planning board meeting of the Watauga Regional Library on March 13 in Johnson City, Tenn. The 60-year-old regional library includes 12 multi-county regions serving 211 small and medium-sized public libraries throughout the state. Mehra presented to the board current trends and challenges public libraries face. He also conducted a SWOT analysis with the board members and representatives of the state library and archives network. After Mehra's presentations, the group created an implementation and action plan and developed a concrete timeline for the strategic planning outcomes.

JOURNALISM AND ELECTRONIC MEDIA
--"A Public Conversation on Web Journalism" set for April 3-4
Web journalism experts from around the country will gather April 3-4 at UT for "A Public Conversation on Web Journalism." The event, hosted by the School of Journalism and Electronic Media and its student news Web site, the Tennessee Journalist, features leaders in Web journalism from Scripps Interactive, the Knoxville News Sentinel, the Poynter Institute, knoxviews.com, The Tennessean, tvguide.com and WBIR-TV, among others. Most sessions are open to the public.
--Bowles to participate in Second Amendment roundtable
Join the Baker Center for a roundtable discussion of the Second Amendment with UT Law School Professors Otis Stevens and Glenn Reynolds, Cumberland Law School's Brandon Denning and UT Journalism and Electronic Media Professor Dorothy Bowles. Bring your questions, bring your comments and be ready for a fascinating dialogue. The discussion will be held at 4 p.m., Thursday, April 3 on the first floor of Hodges Library. The event is open to the public.
--Bates to present work in Sweden and Denmark this summer
Two papers by Ben Bates have been accepted for presentation at international conferences this summer. Bates will present "Content at the Margins: Threshold Effects of Intellectual Property Policy" at the International Association for Media and Communication Research (IAMCR) conference in July in Stockholm, Sweden. He will also present "PERFORM Anxiety: Threshold Effects in Online Music Licensing" at AoIR 9.0, the Association of Internet Researchers conference, which will be held in October in Copenhagen, Denmark.

-- Center submits NSF grant
CICS submitted on behalf of Suzie Allard, Lorraine Normore and Carol Tenopir a $3.8 million grant to NSF, as part of a five-year $20 million NSF grant with an international team of scientists.

Registration is now open for eligible students who wish to participate in the College of Communication and Information Spring/Summer 2008 Commencement Ceremony. Students must RSVP online by Friday, April 25. The event will be held at 2 p.m. on Friday, May 9, in the Knoxville Convention Center.
