School of JEM, TNJN to Host 'A Public Conversation on Web Journalism'
Web journalism experts from around the country will gather April 3-4 at the University of Tennessee for "A Public Conversation on Web Journalism," hosted by the School of Journalism and Electronic Media and the school's student news Web site TNJN.com.
The two-day event features leaders in Web journalism from Scripps Interactive, the Knoxville News Sentinel, the Poynter Institute, knoxviews.com, The Tennessean, tvguide.com and WBIR-TV, among others. Most sessions are open to the public.
Rob Curley, vice president for product development at WashingtonPost.Newsweek Interactive, will deliver the keynote address at an invitation-only dinner on April 3.
The conference will feature a variety of online professionals and academics in several forums and panels. Academics attending the conference will also discuss ways to start or enhance student-operated news Web sites on their campuses and the possibility of forming a national network of campus news Web sites.
Participating students will have an opportunity to meet with professionals to discuss preparations and plans for a career in online journalism.
The event is the final component of the yearlong Tennessee Journalist Web Journalism Project, an endeavor to bring online journalism professionals into the classroom. The project was made possible by a $50,000 grant from the Scripps Howard Foundation, the philanthropic arm of the E.W. Scripps Co.
