COLLEGE NEWS

-- Leading international broadcaster to kick off International Communication and Information Lecture Series
Gary Thatcher, associate director of the International Broadcasting Bureau, will present the first in a series of annual College of Communication and Information International Lectures with "Twice Burned: Gathering and Presenting News in Troubled Countries." The event is set for 5 p.m. to 6 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 31, in the McClung Museum Auditorium. A reception will follow. Thatcher has extensive experience with international broadcasting issues from Russia to the Balkans and now in the Middle East. He has recently helped develop U.S. broadcasting operations in Iraq, Afghanistan, and Pakistan. IBB oversees the Voice of America, Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty, Radio and TV Marti, and Radio Sawa.

-- College announces International Brown Bag Luncheon Series schedule
The college's International Brown Bag Luncheon Series schedule is now set for the spring 2008 semester. The events will be held Thursday, Jan. 31; Friday, Feb. 22; Friday, March 28; and Friday, April 18. All will be held from 12:00 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. in Communications, Room 420.

  • Thursday, Jan. 31 - Gary Thatcher, associate director of the International Broadcasting Bureau overseeing Voice of America, Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty, Radio Sawa, Al Hurrah, Radio and TV Marti, and other external broadcasting units of the U.S. government, will discuss training and research opportunities sponsored by IBB. He will also address grant funding opportunities available through the Broadcasting Board of Governors.
  • Friday, Feb. 22 - The Fulbright Program, presented by Catherine Luther, who will discuss her recent Fulbright in Japan, and Ben Bates and Carol Tenopir, who will discuss their Fulbright experiences in Finland.
  • Friday, March 28 - Leading a Study Abroad Program. Ken Levine will share insights he has gained leading several groups to Paris and Brussels and offer suggestions for those interested in leading future groups.
  • Friday, April 18 - Conducting Research In Another Country.  Dania Bilal will discuss her research in Lebanon, Egypt, and elsewhere.

ADVERTISING AND PUBLIC RELATIONS

--Doctoral candidates to present study results at international conference
Public relations doctoral candidates Emma K. Wright and Sora Kim have had their study, "Cultural Issues in Crisis Communication: A Comparative Study of Crisis Messages Chosen by South Korean and U.S. Print Media," accepted for presentation at the International Communication Association Conference, which will be held May 22-26 in Montreal.

-- Assistant professor's article to be published in Journal of Business Ethics
Lu Tang's article, "An integral model of collective action in organizations and beyond," has been accepted for publication in the Journal of Business Ethics.

-- Faculty members and students to present research at International Communication Association
Several faculty and graduate students have had papers accepted for presentation at the 58th annual meeting of the International Communication Association Meeting, which will be held May 22-26 in Montreal. For more information about the conference, visit http://www.icahdq.org/.

-- Faculty members and graduate students plan strong showing at Southern States Communication Association meeting
Seven faculty members and graduate students in the School of Communication Studies have had papers accepted for presentation at the 78th annual meeting of the Southern States Communication Association in Savannah, Ga. Bob Ambler, Justin Davis, John Haas, Linda Jurczak, Mike Kotowski, Ken Levine, and Lu Tang will deliver presentations during the conference. -- School sets date for alumni reception
The third annual Communication Studies Alumni Reception will be held Saturday, April 26 at the Foundry located in the World's Fair Park. -- Communication Studies Club sets next meeting date

-- Bilal article is journal's most downloaded in 2007
Dania Bilal's article, "Differences and Similarities in Information Seeking: Children and Adults as Web Users," was Information Processing and Management's most downloaded article in 2007. The article, which Bilal co-authored with J. Kirby, was originally published in the Journal in September 2002. 

-- SIS announces date of annual alumni and friends day
The School of Information Sciences will hold its annual Alumni and Friends Day on Saturday, March 8 in the McClung Museum Auditorium. -- Three JEM students to gain hands-on experience at Super Bowl XLII
JEM students Kyle Blackburn, Erin Hoskins, and Keri Vaughn have been selected to participate behind the scenes in Super Bowl XLII as part of Team UT. -- Next College Research Forum focuses on interorganizational knowledge networks
Dr. Lu Tang, an assistant professor in the School of Communication Studies, will discuss "Interorganizational Knowledge Networks: The case of the biotechnology industry" at the upcoming College Research Forum. The event is set for 12:15-1:30 p.m., Monday, Jan. 28, in Arena Dining Room C.
