-- CCI Board of Visitors member presents ethics workshop for FEMA
Board of Visitors member and CCI alumna Mary Beth West was one of several national leaders of the Public Relations Society of America (PRSA) who conducted a communications workshop for FEMA public affairs and management staff at its Washington, D.C. headquarters. The presentation, which included an ethics workshop by West, was broadcast to FEMA's 10 regions across the country. West is the national chair of the PRSA advocacy advisory board.

ADVERTISING AND PUBLIC RELATIONS

-- Fall serves as tourism conference keynote speaker
Lisa Fall and her husband, Joe Fall, are keynote speakers at the annual Tennessee Association of Convention and Visitors Bureaus conference hosted this year on Jan. 17-18 at Fall Creek Falls State Park. Lisa will discuss results from her year-long state of Tennessee welcome center survey and provide marketing recommendations for Tennessee destination managers. Joe will discuss recent trends - including culinary and agri-tourism - and their relevance to Tennessee.

INFORMATION SCIENCES

-- Mehra presents work at ALISE conference
Bharat Mehra presented two papers, "Integrating Socially Relevant Projects and Achieving Meaningful Community Outcomes in Required Library and Information Science Courses: From a Service Model to Community Engagement" and "Applications of Community-Based Action Research in Elective Courses:  Partnering Library and Information Science Students with Underserved Populations to Meet their Information Technology Needs," (co-authored with Robert Sandusky) at the Association for Library and Information Science Education (ALISE) annual conference, held Jan. 8-11 in Philadelphia. Mehra also served on a conference panel, where he presented "Cross-Cultural Learning Process of LIS International Doctoral Students."

CENTER FOR INFORMATION AND COMMUNICATION STUDIES

-- Center submits two more grant proposals
The Center for Information and Communication Studies submitted two grant proposals in late December on behalf of faculty members. The Intercultural Leadership Toolkit for Library and Information Professionals, led by the School of Information Sciences in partnership with the University of Puerto Rico, would provide tools to address the needs of many cultures. The proposal was submitted by Suzie Allard, Bharat Mehra, Ed Cortez, and Michelle Violanti. The second proposal, Public Library Leaders for the 21st Century (PUBLIC), meets a need for public librarians with interdisciplinary competencies through internship/practice in public libraries, graduate instruction, and curriculum support. The proposal was submitted by Bharat Mehra and Ben Bates.
