MESSAGE 3 - Fall 03
CONGRATULATIONS to the 46 new advertising majors admitted to the School last week. And thanks to Student Ad Club for providing the after-meeting pizza.
MANDATORY ADVISING for all advertising majors is scheduled for Monday, Oct. 13, 4 p.m. This far-in-advance warning should allow you plenty of time to adust your schedule and attend the advising session that day.
IF DR. MICHAEL HOEFGES WAS YOUR ADVISOR, your new advisor is Dr. Ron Taylor.
THE SCHOOL SECRETARY, JOYCE HOLLOWAY, WILL BE ON VACATION Sept. 29 through Oct. 6. The office will be open during limited hours that week. If you have an appointment with a faculty member, that faculty member will meet you at the office door at the appointed time.
THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A PERIODIC SENTENCE AND A LOOSE SENTENCE AND WHY YOU SHOULD KNOW THE DIFFERENCE. In a loose sentence the main idea comes first. Example: Advertising majors find job quickly if they have 4.0 GPAs and several internships. In a periodic sentence the main idea comes second. Example: If they have 4.0 GPAs and several internships, advertising majors find jobs quickly. The problem with loose sentences in written instructions and warnings is that some people may read only the first part of the sentence, panic, and take unnecessary action.
Students graduating this year receive a letter from the University Registrar that has an unfortunate loose sentence. It begins this way: You should take your Degree Audit Report to your academic advisor. And it ends this way: for instructions on coursework you need to complete in order to receive your undergraduate degree. Some students are reading only the first part of the sentence and delivering DARS reports to their advisors. Please note the second part of the sentence...for instructions on coursework you need to complete. If your DARS report is correct, there is no reason to take it to your advisor. If you do have questions, however, please do make an appointment to see your advisor. And, oh, please wear your heaviest winter coat tomorrow if you are visiting the North Pole!
MANDATORY ADVISING SESSIONS FOR ADVERTISING MAJORS - Students who have been fully-admitted as majors in the School of Advertising should attend the mandatory advising session in order to register for classes for Spring Semester 2004. This meeting will be held on Monday, October 13, 2003 at 4:00 pm in Com 208.
Please bring a copy of your academic history and a list of the courses you intend to take for spring semester.

To register for either course, you must send to busad@tennessee.edu (1) your name, (2) your sudent id number (SS #), (3) the date you are cleared to register, and (4) the section numbers of BADM 201 and/or section numbers of Fin 303 you want to register for. I would recommend checking a day or so after your cleared date to make sure you have been registered for the course.
DO REGISTER AT THE FIRST OPPORTUNITY as that greatly increases your chances of getting the courses you need. And if you are unable to schedule an advertising class, please let us know at adv@utk.edu

Paid Internship Opportunity - Young & Rubicam, NY - Account Coordinator
For the ninth year, the School of Advertising and Public Relations is seeking applications for a paid internship at Young & Rubicam, NY, for this upcoming summer.Internships in account management are very difficult to come by, and we are fortunate that Y&R has set aside money for a UT advertising student.
This opportunity was created by former UT students who worked at Y&R. Each has been offered a permanent job with Y&R in account management. Others, like Marc Loffredo, have been asked to come back to interview for permanent positions as a result of interviewing for the internship. Like Jeff, Kevin and Nicole, Marc was also offered a permanent position. Y&R has been very impressed with Jeff, Kevin, Marc, Nicole and other UT students that have impressed with Jeff, Kevin, Marc, Nicole and other UT students that have worked for them; therefore, they are giving us this opportunity again this year.
