MESSAGE FOR PUBLIC RELATIONS AND ADVERTISING STUDENTS - Spring 2004
REGISTRATION FOR MINITERM AND SUMMER SCHOOL opens Monday, March 1. You do not have to be advised before you register for these sessions. Whether a class "makes" depends upon the number of students who register. If you plan to attend any of these sessions, register early.
STUDENT AD CLUB is planning a trip to the Knoxville Ice Bears v. Winston-Salem on March 18. The club will pay for the tickets. If you are interested in going, email Jonathan Fish at jfishl@utk.edu by Friday, Feb. 27.
INFORMATION PACKETS FOR MIAMI AD SCHOOL are available in the School office. See Dr. Haley if you are interested in having one.
ADVISING SESSIONS FOR FALL REGISTRATION will be held soon after spring break. Check your email for dates and times.
THE SCHOOL OF ADVERTISING AND PUBLIC RELATIONS will undergo an academic program review during March 1-3. A team of five university professors will study the school, its programs, and its students.

GROUP ADVISING FOR ADVERTISING MAJORS: Group advising for all advertising majors will be held on Wednesday, March 17. There will be two sessions: one at 12:00 Noon and one at 4 p.m. Both sessions will be held in Com 208. You may attend either session; however, students whose last names begin with the letters A-L should come to the noon session, if possible, and students whose last names begin with the letters M-Z should come to the 4:00 pm session.
Please bring a list of courses you intend to take summer and fall semesters. If you plan to graduate in fall semester, please bring a copy of your transcript and your DARS report if you have questions about meeting graduation requirements.

POLICY REGARDING Business Administration 101:
-- BA 101 is one of the prerequisites to BA 201
-- A student may test out (proficiency) at one of the appointed times during the course of the semester. We have currently scheduled the following testout date:

Monday March 15 - 2:00pm 4:00pm

Prerequisites for these courses will strictly be enforced.
Students in other colleges need to e-mail their requests to busad@tennessee.edu. Their request must include the following:
NAME, I.D. NUMBER, SECTION DESIRED, REGISTRATION DATE - (PETITION INFORMATION FOR BA 101 IF APPLICABLE)
Students will be enrolled on their registration date (provided their advising flag is cleared and there are no holds) in the order they contacted the office. If there is a problem associated with their request they will be contacted via e-mail for resolution.
There are no acceptable substitutions for BA 201 and all upper division classes in the Business minor must be taken in residence.

After graduating from UT in December 2002, I remember frantically searching for a job in advertising. Thankfully, I received an email such as this one which eventually landed me a job with OMD Atlanta as an Assistant Strategist. Well, I have good news for those of you pondering your professional future; we currently have a handful of media planning positions available:

NORTH STAR DESTINATION STRATGEGIES WILL BE ON CAMPUS, FRIDAY, APRIL 16 TO INTERVIEW FOR TWO INTERNSHIPS IN NASHVILLE. Samara Hughes, a 2003 advertising graduate, will be on campus on Friday, April 16, to discuss these internships with interested students. Information regarding the internships was previously distributed and is reprinted below. If you are interested in attending the group session at 10 a.m. on Friday, April 16, in the School office, send an email message to adv@utk.edu. by Wednesday Noon, April 14. North Star Destination Strategies is a marketing consulting firm that specializes in helping small to mid-size destinations in identifying and developing their brand through research, strategic planning and creative implementation. The available position will allow students to help develop marketing and communication strategies. The internship will require the student to be available at least 20 hours per week (Monday through Friday). Pay is $8 per hour. In some cases, weekend travel may be necessary. Responsibilities include: Assisting the President, Marketing Coordinator and Marketing Manager with daily tasks, consumer profiling, tracking and monitoring projects and data entry and analysis.

MESSAGE FOR ADVERTISING AND Public Relations MAJORS
PLEASE NOTE THE FOLLOWING CHANGES IN CLASSES FOR MINITERM, SUMMER, AND FALL SEMESTER, AND THE POLICY REGARDING PRACTICUM CREDIT.
MINITERM: ADV 380 (for public relations majors) has been cancelled.
SUMMER: ADV 340 has been cancelled. An additional section of Adv 340 has been added to the fall course schedule.
ADV 380 has been cancelled.
PR 320 has been cancelled. An additional section of PR 320 has been added to the fall schedule.
FALL
Sections of PR 270, ADV 250, ADV 340, PR 320, ADV 310, and ADV 490 have been addded.
ADV 490 is special topics, and the topic is Interactive Media. The instructor is Dr. Sally McMillan and the course meets 10:10 to 1:10 on Wednesday. Course pre-req is Adv 360 and enrollment is limited to 12. ADV 490 is open to both graduate and undergraduate students. For undergraduates ADV 490 can count as a communication elective. For graduate students it may count as an elective.
There have been changes in meeting times and classrooms as well. Most notable is the flipflopping of Adv 450 and Adv 470.

SUMMER PRACTICUM CREDIT. The School does not offer practicum or field experience credit in the summer. However, you may earn credit in the summer and register for the credit in fall semester. PR Majors should have already made arrangments with Dr. Fall and ADV majors should pick up forms in the School office. THERE IS NO RETROACTIVE CREDIT FOR PRACTICUM OR FIELD EXPERIENCE; YOU MUST FILE REPORTS WHILE YOU ARE COMPLETING THE WORK. You can not come back in the fall and expect to receive credit for a summer job when you have not made prior arrangements to file reports and to receive credit.
