MESSAGE FOR ADVERTISING AND PUBLIC RELATIONS MAJORS - FALL 2004

CONGRATULATIONS to the 46 new advertising majors folowing the advertising curriculum and to the 15 new advertising majors following the public relations curriculum who were recently admitted to the School.

GROUP ADVISING SESSIONS will be held on Wednesday, Oct. 27 for advertising students and on Wednesday, Nov. 3 for public relations students. Times and places will be announced later.

COURSE SUB FLUBS: Several students have run afoul of course substitution rules. Please keep the following in mind:

JEM 201 Writing for Mass Media does not count as a communication
elective for majors in the College of Communication and Information.
This course carries credit only for majors outside the College.

C&I 150 replaced Com 100 and Com 150. You can not count C&I 150
as a communication elective. It is the same course as Com 100 and Com 150.

If you are planning to do study abroad, you must work out IN ADVANCE what credits you will earn and how they will be applied to your curriculum requirements. This applies both to students registering for PR 491 Foreign Study as well as students registering for credit at foreign universities. In addition, students signing up for a U.S. exchange program should work out their credits in advance. Note: credits earned anywhere other than the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, DO NOT COUNT in the last-30-hour-rule.

IF YOU ARE MINORING IN BUSINESS, a new policy requires you to declare your major in the College of Business Administration Advising Office. You no longer will be able to register for courses in the business minor; the advising center in the College of Business will register you for the classes you need, provided you declare the minor and attend an advising session for minors. Advising sessions for business minors are held each Friday from 4:00 p.m. to 5 p.m.

FUNDING CUTS FORCE SCHEDULE CHANGES: The University has cut all extra section funding for 300-level and 400-level classes for spring semester. If you were enrolled in a class that is being cut, we are moving your enrollment to another section-if your schedule permits. Please note the following:

1. The evening section of Adv 350 has been canceled. Enrollment will be shifted to open sections during the day.

2. The evening section of Adv 360 has been canceled. Enrollment is being shifted to the day section.

3. The second section of Adv 380 has ben canceled. Enrollment is being shifted to the first section.

4. The MWF section of PR 470 has been canceled. Enrollment is being shifted to the TR section.

5. Public Relations 550 has been canceled.

6. No additional sections of Adv 310 will be offered. We have accommodated all requests (except two) that were received by our stated deadline. Those two students will be given first priority to add on the first day of class.

We realize that these changes may affect or conflict with your enrollment in other courses; therefore, we recommend that you check your spring class schedule on Thursday, when changes will be posted on Circle Park Online.

Please remember that we can not add you to a section if there is a schedule conflict. You will have to resolve the conflict and let us know by replying to this email that your schedule allows you to be added.

The cuts in funding were a most unwelcome surprise to us. However, the School of Advertising and Public Relations faculty and staff will work with you as much as possible to amend your schedule.
