MESSAGE 1 for Advertising and Public Relations Majors - Spring 2005
OPENINGS IN CLASSES: There are a small number of openings in Adv 350 (12:40 and 3:40 TR) and in Adv 360 this semester. If you need these classes, plan to attend the next class session. Openings occur as students fail to attend the first class meeting or do not have the stated pre-reqs.
PROPOSED COURSE OFFERINGS FOR MINITERM AND SUMMER. If you were unable to fit a course you need into your schedule this spring, you may want to consider taking a course in miniterm and/or summer. The School's proposed courses are listed below. Classes need an enrollment of 12 or more students to stay on the schedule. Enrollment begins in March.

INTERVIEW ATTIRE: Career Services will host its first "Extreme Makeover: Work Wardrobe Edition" on February 9, 2005 at 5 PM in the UC Auditorium. Proffit's Department Store is supporting the event by sending experts and clothing to demonstrate each stage of business dress from formal interview dress to "casual Friday" attire. This event is open to all students.

INTERNSHIP AVAILABLE: Broadway in Knoxville is looking for 2-3 interns this semester. The company brings Broadway shows to Knoxville and is responsible for all of the advertising, public relations, and publicity of the shows, as well as ticketing. Responsibilities would include (but not be limited to): help arrange press kits, assist with advertising ideas/campaigns, assist with the programs and assist with office duties.

CONGRATULATIONS TO THE 35 NEW MAJORS admitted to the School this semester. There are 19 new students following the advertising curriculum and 16 new students following the public relations curriculum.
YOU MAY STILL APPLY FOR A SCHOOL SCHOLARSHIP. The University-wide scholarship deadline was Feb. 1, but we will still consider your application. You also need to complete a supplemental form for the School. Turn in your scholarship application to the Office of Financial Aid in Student Services Building.
YOU DON'T HAVE TO BE ADVISED TO REGISTER FOR MINITERM OR SUMMER SCHOOL. First dates to register are Feb. 21 for miniterm and March 1 for summer school. Each year the school puts forward a list of courses based on student demand and faculty availability. In miniterm, the School will offer Adv 310 and Adv 480. In first session of summer, the School will offer Adv 310 and Adv 480. In first session of summer, the School will offer Adv 250 and PR 270. In full session the school is offering Adv 450, Adv 470, PR 470, and PR 490, Special Topics. An offering must have an enrollment of at least 12 students for the course to remain on the schedule.
YOU DO HAVE TO BE ADVISED TO REGISTER FOR FALL SEMESTER. Fall semester registration opens March 14. Tentative dates for advising in the School are Monday, Feb. 21 for advertising students and Wednesday, Feb. 23 for public relations students. The University is still debating once-a-year vs. once-a-semester advising. Once we have the final word on that, you will receive an announcement via email of the dates and times for advising. You'll have adequate notice to get advised before registration opens on March 14.

The summer will conclude with an intensive team project.
PROGRAM DETAILS: The summer program runs for approximately 10 weeks and is full-time (9 a.m.-5 p.m. five days/week) and is UNPAID. Current college students (typically juniors and seniors) are invited to apply.

ADVERTISING AND PUBLIC RELATIONS STUDENTS are invited to watch the District 7 AAF Student Case Competition presentations this Friday, April 15, at the Knoxville Marriott Hotel. Presentations begin at 7 a.m. and run through the late afternoon. The University of Tennessee will present at 10:45 a.m. Audience seating opens 10 minutes before a presentation. Other universities participating and their presentation times include ETSU, 7 a.m.; Louisiana at Lafayette, 7:45 a.m.; LSU, 8:30; Alabama, 9:15 a.m.; Georgia, 10 a.m.; Loyola, 1:45 p.m.; Memphis, 2:30 p.m., and Samford, 3:15 p.m. The winning team will be announced at 10:30 p.m. Friday immediately following the District ADDY Awards.
THE TOMBRAS GROUP offers a summer unpaid internship beginning in mid-May and running to August. The internship is offered to students who are sophomores and above. THE MURPHY-CATES LEARNING CENTER needs someone who can envision a workable, creative Marketing Plan and implement it. The initial reward is the unusual and rare opportunity to create and carry out a marketing plan for an existing entity. MESSAGE FOR ADVERTISING AND PUBLIC RELATIONS - SPRING 2005
SCRIPPS-HOWARD INTERNSHIP DEADLINE IS MONDAY, APRIL 11. The School of Advertising and Public Relations is coordinating the selection of a Scripps-Howard intern to work in the retail advertising department of the Knoxville News-Sentinel this summer. The intern will receive a grant of $2,500 for the summer and upon successful completion of the internship will receive a scholarship of $1,000 awarded by the News-Sentinel. To apply for the internship, submit your resume and a letter of interest (addressed to Dr. Ron Taylor, Director, School of Advertising and Public Relations) in the School office no later than Noon, Monday, April 11.
The internship is full-time for the summer and the selected intern will need access to a car. Remember to submit your cover letter and resume to the School office, not to the News-Sentinel. Applicants must be fully accepted to the major in advertising. Applicant names and resumes will be forwarded to the News-Sentinel Human Resources Office, and the staff there will schedule interviews.
MINITERM AND SUMMER SCHOOL NOTES. Enrollment in Adv 310 and Adv 480 is at capacity for miniterm. If you were planning to take either of these courses, you can count on them being offered.
For Summer School, the following courses have "made" (i.e, have sufficient enrollment):

If you are planning to take any of the above courses in summer school, please register. Decisions about which classes to "keep" for summer will be made in about two weeks.
STUDENT AAF DISTRICT 7 COMPETITION will be held in Knoxville on Friday, April 15. Six advertising seniors, collectively known as Root Beer Rangers, were selected by the advertising faculty judges on March 10 to represent the Univerity of Tennessee in the district competition. Root Beer Rangers will compete with teams from eight other universities for the right to advance to the national competition. The competition is open to anyone who wants to observe. The time of the UT team presentation will be announced within the next week.

Below is the official annoucement for the PUBLICIS USA paid summer internship with details on how to apply. Deadline for applications is March 2.
ANNOUNCING AN EXCLUSIVE INTERNSHIP OPPORTUNITY FOR UT ADVERTISING STUDENTS!
PUBLICIS USA will be offering a paid internship to a UT advertising student in either account management or account planning for this upcoming summer in the New York office.
PUBLICIS is a major multinational advertising agency, headquartered in Paris, France. The CEO of PUBLICIS USA is none other than UT advertising graduate Gill Duff. Mr. Duff will come to the UT campus in March along with a HR representative to interview candidates for the internship. You will not need to travel to NYC for the interview.
The internship is open to Juniors and Seniors (yes, even graduating seniors!) The HR people at PUBLICIS look on the internship program as an extended 8-week interview and will hire their interns when positions open up!
The PUBLICIS internship program is a very well-organized 8-week program that begins in June. You can read about the program at the PUBLICIS USA website, www.Publicis-usa.com. Then go to 'people,' then to 'intern program.'

MESSAGE FOR ADVERTISING AND PUBLIC RELATIONS - 2005
A MEETING FOR SENIORS ATTENDING THE COLLEGE COMMENCEMENT CEREMONY will be held at 2 p.m. on Friday, May 6. Go to the College web page or the School of Advertising and Public Relation web page for complete information.
AND FOR THOSE NOT GRADUATING...PR 470 will not be offered in summer. There has been no advance enrollment in the course. If you are still waiting to be get into a required advertising or public relations course for fall, be patient and remain calm. The School will open new sections as they are warranted and funding is approved by Central Administration. This may take a couple of months. IF YOU ARE ALREADY ADMITTED AS A MAJOR IN THE SCHOOL AND HAVE ATTEMPTED TO REGISTER, THEN WE WILL SOMEHOW FIND A SPACE FOR YOU IN CLASSES THAT YOU NEED TO STAY IN SEQUENCE THIS FALL.
ENROLLMENT IN SEVERAL PR CLASSES FOR FALL IS LOW and there's a good chance some sections of courses will be canceled. If you haven't registered for public relations classes, do so this week.

INTERNSHIP: The Tombras Group is offering a public relations focused internship for the months of late May until August. The internship will be working on the public relations aspects of an advertising campaign. This will be an unpaid internship, but may result in a position placement with the client. If interested, please contact Crystal Yates at cyates@utk.edu with an available interview time. Interviews will be held May 6.
