See Yourself in a Diversity of Careers

Are you still trying to decide on a major? Do you see communication and information in your future? Then join the College of Communication and Information for a special 11:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. event on February 28 in the Black Cultural Center.

Young professionals in communication and information will reflect on their job experiences. A diverse group of panelists includes professionals in advertising, broadcasting, employee communication, libraries, newspapers, and public relations. 

Find out how to turn a college degree into a career. Engage in a lively exchange of ideas about how to envision the career of your dreams and make that dream a reality.

The first 100 people to register for the event will be treated to lunch.

Monica Colon-Aguirre

  

Mónica Colón-Aguirre
Master's Student
School of Information Sciences

 

Mónica Colón-Aguirre is a native of Puerto Rico; she is currently enrolled at UT's School of Information Sciences master's program and is expecting to graduate in spring 2008. Her previous academic work include a bachelor's in business administration from the University of Puerto Rico, Río Piedras Campus and a master's in business administration from the Inter American University of Puerto Rico. Before moving to Tennessee she worked as an assistant librarian at the Inter American University for more than three years. There she was in charge of budgeting and acquisitions of various materials for the 11 campuses that form the university system. Her future plans include studying a PhD in information sciences and becoming a professor in that area. Her research interests include: knowledge management and the development of knowledge retention plans for libraries, professional development in information organizations and scientific communication.

 

 

 

Molly Driscoll
Account Supervisor
Madison MediaWorks

 

Molly Driscoll is an account supervisor for Madison MediaWorks, a lead generation advertising agency in Knoxville, Tennessee. Her responsibilities include supervising several national accounts. In order to generate leads for her clients, Driscoll works with several types of media including television, radio, online, direct mail and print. She has written and produced several national television spots. 

Driscoll began her college career as a dean scholar at Fordham University. She transferred in her junior year and finished her education at the University of Tennessee. She graduated in the spring of 2007 summa cum laude with a bachelor of science in journalism and electronic media.

Ka'Leia Evans

Qwest Communications 

 

In 2006 Ka'Leia Evans joined the staff of Qwest Communications as a staffing coordinator. During her short tenure she has been involved with a variety of projects, including planning and implementing a three-day event for approximately 300 human resources employees. This project was a huge success and one of her great accomplishments to date with many more to come in this position.

Evans is a graduate of the University of Tennessee where she originally started out majoring in business. In the fall of 2003, she decided to change her major to communication. She realized that if she was going to have a career in business, she needed to become comfortable speaking with and in front of others. As a Speech Communications major, Evans excelled in public speaking and in her writing abilities. In the spring of her senior year, she became involved with the creation of the Communication Studies Club where she held the position of treasurer. Other important aspects of her life include her family, friends and sorority.

Sora Kim

Sora Kim is a PhD candidate in advertising and public relations at the University of Tennessee. She has a professional experience as a marketing communication manager for more than 6 years. She worked for multinational corporations such as Softbank, Saerom Information, IBM, and Microsoft in Korea. She was a newspaper reporter before she worked in the Ad/PR field and worked as a part-time copywriter mainly targeting Chinese-American and Korean American community in New York City while studying at NYU. Her research interests include how corporate campaigns including advertising and public relations can influence consumers' evaluations of companies and products and their bonding relationships with them.

 Brandon Long

Long is an anchor and managing editor at WMGT-TV in Macon, Georgia. Brandon moved to Middle Georgia from Tennessee after working at WPTY/WLMT-TV in Memphis and WBIR-TV in Knoxville. He graduated from the University of Tennessee and studied television news and political science.

He has been active in a number of professional and community organizations, including the National Association of Black Journalists (NABJ), Radio-Television News Directors Association (RTNDA), Alpha Epsilon Rho (Broadcasting Honor Society), the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), and Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Incorporated.

Reggie Murphy

  

  Reginald "Reggie" Murphy
Director of Research Services
Gannett Co., Inc.

 

Reginald "Reggie" Murphy is currently the director of research services for Gannett Co., Inc. In this position he's charged with managing consumer research projects for Gannett's 90 daily newspapers and nearly 1,000 non-daily publications and websites, with projects focused on strategic plan development for increased readership, circulation and advertising revenue as well as marketing of broadcast, print, online and mobile products and services. He's responsible for designing and implementing research projects that test new concepts, ideas and products for Gannett's Newspaper, Broadcast and Digital divisions as well as company's innovation arm - the Gannett Center for Design and Innovation. He leads strategic research projects utilizing quantitative and qualitative research methods; analyze research data, organize results and present recommendations to company executives. He's been awarded Gannett's Chairman's Award for the past two years for his job performance and overall contributions made to the company.

Murphy teaches courses in media management at The George Washington University in Washington DC and serves on the Elon University (NC) School of Communications Advisory Board. He received his master's and doctoral degrees in communications from UT in 1994 and 1998 respectively.
