--College sets date for fall faculty/staff meeting
The College of Communication and Information will hold its next faculty/staff meeting at 9:15 a.m. on Friday, Sept. 12. The meeting will be held in 201 Nursing.

ADVERTISING AND PUBLIC RELATIONS
--PR prof and JEM doctoral candidate present paper at conference
Michael J. Palenchar, assistant professor in the School of Advertising and Public Relations, and doctoral candidate Bernardo H. Motta, School of Journalism and Electronic Media, had their paper, "Community right to know and environmental justice: Public relations practitioners are neither getting nor using the message," accepted for presentation at the National Communication Association (NCA) convention. The convention will be held later this year in San Diego.
--Organization selects Fall as international conference instructor
Lisa Fall will serve as a "Learning to Teach" instructor at the Public Relations Society of America (PRSA) International Conference. The conference will be held this October in Detroit. The training sessions, which are sponsored by the PRSA Educators Academy, target PR professionals seeking to transition to academe.
--McMillan, CCI alum publish paper on mobile advertising
"Gearing up for mobile advertising: A cross-cultural examination of key factors that drive mobile messages home to consumers," by Y.K. Choi, Jang-Sun Hwang, and Sally McMillan was recently published in Psychology and Marketing. Choi, a Korean university professor, and Hwang, a CCI master's program and doctoral program graduate, facilitated data collection from Korean students. McMillan facilitated data collection from Tennessee students. The authors then compared the two groups of students on their use of and responses to advertising on mobile devices (e.g. cell phones).

COMMUNICATION STUDIES
--School hosts summer research colloquium
The School of Communication Studies will host a summer research colloquium from 3:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday, June 24 in 309 Communications. Dr. Carrie Oliveira, an assistant professor in the Department of Communication at East Tennessee State University, will present her research investigating predictors of tease aversiveness in interpersonal communication. Olivera earned a Ph.D. from Michigan State University, where she focused on interpersonal communication and computer mediated communication. Her current research focuses on teasing and bullying in close relationships and norms and biases in online environments. --Journal publishes Tenopir's article
"Local Citation Analysis, Publishing and Reading Patterns: Using Multiple Methods to Evaluate Faculty Use of an Academic Library's Research Collection" by Carol Tenopir and Concepcion Wilson, University of New South Wales, Australia, has been published in the current issue of the Journal of the American Society for Information Science and Technology (JASIST).

--Bowles nominated for governor's Advisory Committee on Open Government
Dorothy Bowles, JEM professor, has been nominated to serve on the governor's new Advisory Committee on Open Government. The advisory committee and an open government legal counsel, headquartered in the state Office of the Comptroller, were authorized under amendments to the state Public Records Act. During its recently completed session, the state Legislature passed major revisions to the Public Records Act for the first time in more than 25 years.

--Center submits proposal to NSF
The Center for Information and Communication Studies has submitted a proposal to the National Science Foundation (NSF). The proposal, "SciMediaNet - A scalable multi-media learning syndicate for informal science education," was submitted on behalf of Ben Bates, Journalism and Electronic Media, and Jack Dongarra, Electrical Engineering and Computer Science.

--College announces spring 2008 dean's list
More than 450 students in the College of Communication and Information earned a spot on the dean's list for their academic achievement during the spring 2008 semester. To qualify for the dean's list, an undergraduate student must earn a term grade point average of 3.80-4.00 (summa cum laude), 3.65-3.79 (magna cum laude), or 3.50-3.64 (cum laude).

-- Journal of Health Communication will publish Kotowski's article
A paper by Mike Kotowski, "Types and Sources of Memorable Breast Cancer Messages and Their Impact on Prevention and Detection Behaviors," will be published in an upcoming edition of the Journal of Health Communication.
--New book by Haas goes to press
"The Communication of Hate" by John Haas and Mike Waltman (UNC-Chapel Hill) is being published by Peter Lange Publishing. The new book is part of the "Language as Social Action" series edited by Howard Giles.
--Jurczak accepts Valdosta State assistant professorship
Congratulations to doctoral program alumna and Communication Studies lecturer Linda Jurczak, who has accepted an assistant professor position with Valdosta State University. Jurczak will begin her new position this fall.
--New faculty member successfully defends dissertation
Congratulations to assistant professor Courtney Wright, who successfully defended her dissertation at Northwestern University. Wright will join the faculty of the School of Communication Studies this fall.

--Wang's study results to be published in ASIS&T journal
The Journal of the American Society for Information Science and Technology (ASIS&T) will publish Peiling Wang's article, "Visualization of Health Subject Analysis Based on Query Term Co-Occurrences," in an upcoming issue. The article reports results of an Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) grant. It is co-authored by Wang and her study collaborators at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee.

--Harmon presents research at public opinion conference
Mark Harmon presented a research paper, "Public Opinion about Broadcasting's Public Interest Obligations: Diversity, Localism & Ownership," to the American Association for Public Opinion Research, May 16 in New Orleans. The paper was co-authored with CCI doctoral student Glenn Hubbard, JEM Professor Benjamin Bates, Todd Chambers of Texas Tech and Steve McClung, Florida State. Chambers and McClung received their doctoral degrees in communications from UT.
--UT Press publishes "Living On" book
Rob Heller's book, "Living On: Portraits of Tennessee Survivors and Liberators," is finally in print. The book, which is the result of five years' of work by Heller and the Tennessee Holocaust Commission, is published by UT Press. In addition, Heller has a creative project, "The Art of the Ampersand," included in the latest edition of Visual Communication Quarterly and his klezmer band, Tennessee Schmaltz, is performing next week at the Bonnaroo music festival.

-- Journal to publish Hoy's paper on banner ad disclosures
The Journal of Consumer Policy will publish Mariea Hoy's paper, "An International Perspective of Online Disclosure Presentation: A Comparison of Banner Ad Disclosures from United States, United Kingdom and Singapore." Hoy co-authored the paper with May Lwin, Nanyang Technological University, Singapore.
--Journal of Computer Mediated Communication accepts paper by McMillan, Hoy
Sally McMillan and Mariea Hoy, as well as former doctoral students Juran Kim and Carolynn McMahan, have had their paper, "A Multifaceted Tool for a Complex Phenomenon: Coding Web-based Interactivity as Technologies for Interaction Evolve," accepted for publication in the Journal of Computer Mediated Communication. The paper is scheduled to appear in the July issue.

--Wang submits grant proposal to National Science Foundation
Peiling Wang, in collaboration with Jian Huang and James Plank in the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at UT Knoxville, submitted a grant proposal to the National Science Foundation's Advanced Learning Technologies program. The proposal is entitled "First Experience Learning Technologies for Computational STEM Instruction."

--Science writing student, recent JEM alumna earn honors
Noa Davidai, a spring 2008 student in Writing about Science and Medicine while working on her master's degree in Ecology & Evolutionary Biology, has won the J. Paul Blakely Award of Excellence established by the Society for Technical Communication, East Tennessee Chapter for two articles she wrote for the science-writing course. One of Davidai's articles, on mountain lions in the Smokies, has been accepted for publication in Appalachian Voice. Ashley Yeager, 2007 UT Torchbearer and honors JEM/Science Journalism graduate, has completed her master's degree in science writing at MIT. She has been selected for the elite science-writing internship at Science News magazine.

--Tenopir keynote focuses on e-journals, reading patterns
Carol Tenopir presented the keynote talk at the annual user group meeting of VTLS Inc., a global company that creates library automation software. Tenopir spoke about her ongoing research on "How E-Journals are Changing Scholarly Reading Patterns" at the event, which was held April 24 on the Virginia Tech campus in Blacksburg.

--JEM students receive scholarships
The School of Journalism and Electronic Media presented 2008-2009 academic year scholarship awards to outstanding students Monday, April 21 at the JEM Honors Convocation.
--Photojournalism students receive honors
Two of Rob Heller's advanced photojournalism students received good news this week. Adam Brimer, a member of last year's advanced photojournalism class, will assist legendary Sports Illustrated photographer Heinz Klutmeier at the Kentucky Derby this weekend. Katie Hogin, a current student in the class, has been accepted into the Danish School of Journalism Photojournalism program for the fall semester. She is one of only eight students worldwide who participating in the program.
--Student news site seeks input for upcoming special section
The staff of the Tennessee Journalist, the news Web site of the School of Journalism and Electronic Media, is putting together a special section for incoming freshmen this summer. If you have ideas or know of ways that you or your students can contribute to this effort, please get in touch with the summer editor-in-chief Shannon Petrie at spetrie(at)utk.edu.
--Luther will present work at international conference
Catherine Luther will present her paper entitled, "Rhetoric of Terror and the Promulgation of U.S. Policies," at the Human Condition Series International Conference on Terror. The conference will take place May 2-3 in Ontario, Canada.

--WUTK tops Metro Pulse poll for third consecutive year
Student-run radio station WUTK-FM 90.3 "The Rock" has been voted best Knoxville radio station for the third straight year by readers of the Metro Pulse, a Knoxville weekly. "The Funhouse" hosts, Rob and Derek, were runners-up in the best radio personality category. --The New York Times publishes article by JEM lecturer
"Long in the Shadows, a Player's Legacy Is Restored," by JEM lecturer Chris Wohlwend was published in the April 18 edition of The New York Times. The article tells the story of Jackie Walker, an All-American linebacker at UT and his eventual induction into the Greater Knoxville Sports Hall of Fame.

--College Board of Visitors member knighted as Dame of Justice at Cambridge
CCI BOV member Dhyana Ziegler, professor of journalism at Florida A&M University, was knighted as a Dame of Justice on April 12 by the Chivalric Order of the Knights of Justice during the World Reunion and Festive Knights Ceremony of Investiture at Cambridge University in England. The order is formerly known as the Knights of the Roundtable. In April 2007, Ziegler was awarded a bronze medal for meritorious service by the Chivalric Order of the Knights of Justice at Warwick Castle for her contributions to education. Ziegler has also been appointed to a five-year term on the Academic Board for the London College for Higher Education.

--PR student campaigns win awards
Two public relations campaigns created by UT students were recognized at the 2008 Public Relations Society of America (PRSA) Volunteer Chapter Gala, held Thursday, April 10 at the Foundry in Knoxville, Tenn. Andrea List and Nicole Arnold's "What's Your Missing Piece" campaign for the OCS branch of the U.S. Army National Guard received an Award of Excellence in the student entries category while Tara Hoffman, Kelly McCune and Abbey Taylor's "Vols Buckle Up: One More. One Less." campaign received an Award of Quality.

--Journal publishes pilot study by Mehra and Lambert
A paper by Bharat Mehra and doctoral candidate Cheryl Ann Lambert (School of Advertising and Public Relations) entitled "Priority Information Needs of African American Graduate Women: A Pilot Study" has been accepted for publication in the second edition of Communication and Social Change. The journal is an annual peer-reviewed publication of the Center for Excellence in Communication Arts, Clark Atlanta University. The second edition is scheduled for publication in June 2008
--SIS students present at Tennessee Library Association meeting
Several SIS students participated in the annual meeting of the Tennessee Library Association, held last week in Kingsport, Tenn. Talks by SIS master's students Sonia Sarangthem and Michelle Garrett and doctoral student Cynthia Manley were featured as part of the meeting's annual SIS Research Forum. Carol Tenopir moderated the forum.

--CD sales benefit WUTK
Student-run radio station WUTK 90.3 "The Rock" recently released a compilation CD, "ReDistilled-25 Years of Knoxville Rock," to celebrate the station's 25-year history of support for Knoxville music. The disc features 17 local bands and musicians (including Scott Miller, Superdrag and R.B. Morris) covering songs released during the past 25 years by other Knoxville bands and musicians (including The V-Roys, The Judybats, and Balboa). Money raised from the CD sales will benefit WUTK. CDs are available at The Disc Exchange, Cat's, Lost & Found Records, Pluto Sports, Rik's Music and Sound, the WUTK tent at Sundown in the City, and P-103 Andy Holt Tower.
--Rescued scholar from Belarus to speak at Baker Center luncheon
Oleg Manaev, a visiting professor in the School of Journalism and Electronic Media, will discuss his continued fight for democratic freedom in his native Belarus--despite government-led propaganda attacks and arrest threats--at a luncheon on April 23 at The Foundry at World's Fair Park. --Faculty members receive SARIF grants
Several faculty members have received Scholarly Activity and Research Incentive Funds (SARIF). The UT Knoxville Office of Research administers over $1.1 million to support research and creative activities through SARIF programs. Recipients of the 2008 SARIF Graduate Research Assistantships include Dr. Peter Gross (Journalism and Electronic Media) with Katerina Spasovska (student) and Dr. Elizabeth Avery and Dr. Courtney Childers (Advertising and Public Relations) with Sora Kim (student).

--CS students learn about career opportunities during Washington, D.C. visit
The School of Communication Studies sponsored a trip to Washington, D.C. in March for 12 undergraduate and graduate students to meet with leaders in government and industry. A special spotlight session at the convention was dedicated to the research of Lu Tang and Mike Kotowski.
--Doctoral student's analysis of post-Katrina news coverage to be published
Justin Davis, a PhD student, had his manuscript, "Blaming Victims and Survivors: An Analysis of Post-Katrina News Coverage," accepted for publication in the special issue on hurricanes and crisis in the Southern Communication Journal.
--Lambda Pi Eta initiation set for April 22
The School of Communication Studies will induct 23 students into Lambda Pi Eta at 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday, April 22 at the University Center. Lambda Pi Eta is the national honor society for communication students sponsored by the National Communication Association.

The Tennessee Journalist, the online news site of the School of Journalism and Electronic Media, recently earned several honors at the 2007 Region 12 Mark of Excellence Awards presented by the Society of Professional Journalists. The publication won several first place awards for reporting, feature writing, and opinion and commentary. In addition, TNJN.com was named best all-around independent online student publication. "Evaluation of internet advertising research: A bibliometric analysis of citations from key sources," by Juran Kim (PhD '06) and Sally McMillan, has been published in the Journal of Advertising. The study addresses how scholarly research has shaped the Internet advertising field since the mid-1990s through a bibliometric analysis of academic literature on Internet advertising.

--Photojournalism students have "Eyes on LaFollette"
Rob Heller and his advanced photojournalism class are spending Friday, April 3 in LaFollette, Tenn. working on the 11th edition of "Eyes on LaFollette." Started in 1993, this is the longest continuously running project of its kind in the country. Students will spend all day today and part of tomorrow documenting life in the small town north of Knoxville. A special section of the LaFollette Press newspaper will feature the students' work.
--Bates, visiting scholars to present research on journalism in China
Three papers coauthored by Ben Bates and visiting scholars from China have been accepted for presentation at the International Association for Media and Communication Research (IAMCR) conference in July in Stockholm, Sweden. Two of the papers, "Copyright in China: Implementation Issues in Electronic Media" and "From Political Risk to Grass-roots Enlightenment: Fostering Citizen Consciousness through Environmental Reporting in China," are coauthored by Tao Liu and Bates. The third, "Civic Journalism in China and the Democratization Process: A Case Study," is coauthored by Chuzhi Wang and Bates.

--Mehra facilitates Watauga Regional Library strategic planning session
Bharat Mehra facilitated the strategic planning board meeting of the Watauga Regional Library on March 13 in Johnson City, Tenn. The 60-year-old regional library includes 12 multi-county regions serving 211 small and medium-sized public libraries throughout the state. Mehra presented to the board current trends and challenges public libraries face. He also conducted a SWOT analysis with the board members and representatives of the state library and archives network. After Mehra's presentations, the group created an implementation and action plan and developed a concrete timeline for the strategic planning outcomes.

Web journalism experts from around the country will gather April 3-4 at UT for "A Public Conversation on Web Journalism." The event, hosted by the School of Journalism and Electronic Media and its student news Web site, the Tennessee Journalist, features leaders in Web journalism from Scripps Interactive, the Knoxville News Sentinel, the Poynter Institute, knoxviews.com, The Tennessean, tvguide.com and WBIR-TV, among others. --Bowles to participate in Second Amendment roundtable
Join the Baker Center for a roundtable discussion of the Second Amendment with UT Law School Professors Otis Stevens and Glenn Reynolds, Cumberland Law School's Brandon Denning and UT Journalism and Electronic Media Professor Dorothy Bowles. --Bates to present work in Sweden and Denmark this summer
Two papers by Ben Bates have been accepted for presentation at international conferences this summer. Bates will present "Content at the Margins: Threshold Effects of Intellectual Property Policy" at the International Association for Media and Communication Research (IAMCR) conference in July in Stockholm, Sweden. He will also present "PERFORM Anxiety: Threshold Effects in Online Music Licensing" at AoIR 9.0, the Association of Internet Researchers conference, which will be held in October in Copenhagen, Denmark.

--PR students' campaign encourages middle school students to buckle up
More than 1,000 students and teachers at Knoxville's South-Doyle Middle School took part in the Big Orange Buckle Campaign 2008 during a Feb. 27 event led by UT public relations students. The outreach campaign, which focused on seatbelt safety, usage, and awareness, was part of the Public Relations Student Society of America's Bateman competition. The competition challenged public relations students across the country to create and execute a month-long campaign for a designated client. This year's client was Chevrolet's Safe Kids Buckle Up in cooperation with General Motors and Chevrolet. The event was made possible by West Chevrolet and the Tennessee Highway Patrol.

--"UT Today" to air on local NBC affiliate
"UT Today," a news magazine program produced by journalism and electronic media students, will begin an eight-week run this Saturday on WBIR-TV Channel 10. The show will air on the NBC affiliate at 1 p.m. Saturdays through April 28. The 30-minute news magazine program has three sections: news, features and sports. Stories focus on UT Knoxville or provide a UT perspective on national and international news. WBIR-TV provides airtime for the show to UT. Students in a media sales class sell advertising time for the news magazine and proceeds are used to offset the expenses of the program. For more information, visit http://www.cci.utk.edu/node/5229.
--Annual Hill Lecture set for April 25
Alan Boyle, award-winning science writer for MSNBC.com, will present the annual Alfred and Julia Hill Lecture at 8 p.m., Tuesday, March 25 in the Shiloh Room of the University Center. Boyle will speak on "Britney Spears vs. Chimps with Spears: Talking about Science in a Tabloid Culture." Boyle joined MSNBC.com when it was founded in 1996 and has been has been the science editor for the site since 1997. The program is free and is open to the public. --Students win top prize at annual conference festival
A student project created for the fall 2007 semester JEM 336 has won the Best of Festival Award for the entire student video division at the Broadcast Education Association's annual Festival of Media Arts. Four students--Doug Griffey, Alyssa Walker, James McLendon, and Kirby Reitz--created the piece titled "Fourth Wall." It will be showcased at the BEA convention in Las Vegas this April. The student video competition is a peer-reviewed event with acceptance rates that rival major discipline publications. The award carries with it free Avid software and a $1,000 cash prize for the participating students.
--Kabrich accepts teaching position
JEM doctoral student Jeanine Kabrich has accepted a full-time teaching position at one of the military academy specialty schools. Kabrich will be a public affairs instructor at the Defense Information School at Fort Meade, Md. beginning March 17. She will be responsible for teaching and certifying military officers in public affairs, and she also will teach journalism and radio/TV courses to enlisted soldiers, sailors, airmen, Coast Guardsmen, and Marines.

Mary Bartolini, assistant director of grants for the Center for Information and Communication Studies, is attending the Institute of Museum and Library Services 2008 WebWise Conference on Libraries and Museums in the Digital World March 6-7 in Miami Beach, Fla. The theme for this year's conference is "WebWise 2.0: The Power of Community." The conference explores how libraries and museums can utilize the new Web 2.0 "architecture of participation," in terms of preservation and access to museum and library collections.

--Cable Mavericks Lecture Series brings Scripps execs to CCI classes
The College of Communication and Information will host The Cable Center's Cable Mavericks Lecture Series on Tuesday, March 4. Doug Hurst, senior vice president and general manager of non-linear distribution at Scripps Networks, and Annette Brun, vice president of marketing at HGTV, will speak to classes and attend a reception. The Cable Center and Scripps are interested in recruiting students from all CCI majors and representatives from both will attend a 2:30-4 p.m. reception in the Communications Building third-floor lobby the day of the lecture. An article co-authored by Sally McMillan, "The return of the house call: The role of internet-based interactivity in bringing health information home to older adults," has been published in Health Communication. McMillan co-authored the study with W. Macias.
--Doctoral student presents work at communication and sport event
Public relations doctoral student Angela Pratt will present a paper, "Inside the Lines: A Colorful Analysis of Televised NCAA Division I Basketball Games," at the 2007 Summit for Communication & Sport, set for Friday, Feb. 29 at Clemson University. Eli Perkins of Dell Inc. co-authored the paper. Pratt collaborated on a second paper to be presented at the event, "Communication with Donors: Donor Motivations and Athletic Development Web Sites," with CCI alumnus Rob Hardin, Gi-Yong Koo and Brody Ruihley from the UT's Department of Sport Management.

Ben Bates' paper "Framing Media Economic Policy: A Social Economics Approach," has been accepted for presentation at the 8th World Media Economics Conference in May in Lisbon, Portugal. Bates will also present "Chasing Externalities in the Digital Network Economy: In Search of Nonmarket, Alternative, and Ancillary Value in Information and Media Products, Markets, and Policies" at a conference hosted by Texas A&M University. The conference, Exploring New Media Worlds: Changing Technologies, Industries, Cultures, and Audiences in Global and Historical Context, takes place this week.

Doctoral candidate Jim Miller will present a paper titled "'Students Don't Just Have Carte Blanche to do Whatever They Want': A Pilot Study Investigating How Public College Administrators Balance the Constitutional Freedoms of the Campus Press and the Broader Interests of their Institutions" March 1 at the AEJMC Midwinter conference in Pittsburgh.
--Legendary White House reporter to participate in media ethics class
Lance Shultz, who teaches the Journalism and Electronic Media Special Topics class in Media Ethics, has arranged for journalist Helen Thomas to participate in Wednesday's class via webcam. Thomas has served as a Hearst Newspapers columnist since July 2000. She is best known for the 57 years she served as a correspondent for United Press International. As UPI's White House bureau chief, she covered every president since John F. Kennedy. Thomas was honored in 1998 with the inaugural Helen Thomas Lifetime Achievement Award, established by the White House Correspondents' Association.
--Jordanian professors visit college
Three professors from the Middle East University of Graduate Studies are visiting the College of Communication and Information this week as part of the UT/IREX grant designed to strengthen journalism education in the Jordan. Sam Swan is coordinating the program for the visitors. CCI in cooperation with IREX and USAID is building a state-of-the-art convergence lab at MEUGS. Bob Legg is working closely with the faculty at MEUGS in the design of the facility. Visiting faculty members will receive special instruction on Avid Video and Audio software as well as curriculum design on television news and production.

-- Ad students secure paid internships in NYC for the upcoming summer
Five UT advertising students received and accepted paid internship offers for summer 2008 with major New York advertising agencies as a result of the recent annual advertising student professional development trip to NYC. Nathan Morrow, TJ Fletcher, Lindsay Reynolds, and Amanda Sherrod will intern at Y&R. Jaclyn Gonzales will intern at Publicis. Several other trip participants are actively interviewing for internships at Lowe, McCann Erickson, MTV, and Hill Holliday. This was the 16th annual UT Ad Student NYC Professional Development trip. During the 5-day event, students visited advertising-related companies in the city to get a behind-the-scenes look at the advertising world.
-- Ad/PR doctoral students to present paper at ICA
School of Advertising and Public Relations doctoral candidates Yoon-Joo Lee and Sora Kim will present their paper, "Media Framing in Corporate Social Responsibility: A Korea US Comparative Study," to the PR division of International Communication Association at its May conference in Montreal. Dr. Eric Haley, professor of advertising, was a co-author of the paper.

The conference is scheduled for July 6-9. Ben Bates has been appointed to the editorial board of The Open Communication Journal, a peer-reviewed, open access online journal which publishes original research articles, reviews, and short articles in all areas of communication sciences and communication studies. Bates also recently served as an external reviewer for the Social Science Research Council of Canada.
-- New Zealand's Ministry of Economic Development features JEM professor's paper
A paper written by Ben Bates as a response to a copyright policy proposal in New Zealand has been made available online by the Ministry of Economic Development. The paper outlines Bates' thoughts (as of 2003) on how to deal with the challenges of copyright with digital media. Another paper by Bates, "What Makes a Good Radio Remote: Factors Leading to Perceived Cost-Effective and Well-Received On-Site Radio Promotional Sales Events" is now available online through Enterpreneur.com. The article was originally published in the Journal of Broadcasting & Electronic Media.

-- Center submits IMLS grant proposal to study Asperger's and information seeking
The Center for Information and Communication Studies recently submitted an Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) grant proposal of behalf of Drs. Dania Bilal and Bharat Mehra to explore the information seeking world of autistic children with Asperger's Syndrome (AS). The faculty members will study cognitive, affective, and sensorimotor behaviors of a group of children with AS while the children interact with Web interfaces available in their school. If the proposal is funded, faculty members will be assisted by a school psychologist specializing in autistic disorders, a middle school library media specialist, and a middle school special education teacher.

Gary Thatcher, associate director of the International Broadcasting Bureau, will present the first in a series of annual College of Communication and Information International Lectures with "Twice Burned: Gathering and Presenting News in Troubled Countries." The event is set for 5 p.m. to 6 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 31, in the McClung Museum Auditorium. A reception will follow. Thatcher has extensive experience with international broadcasting issues from Russia to the Balkans and now in the Middle East. He has recently helped develop U.S. broadcasting operations in Iraq, Afghanistan, and Pakistan. IBB oversees the Voice of America, Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty, Radio and TV Marti, and Radio Sawa.

-- CCI Board of Visitors member presents ethics workshop for FEMA
Board of Visitors member and CCI alumna Mary Beth West was one of several national leaders of the Public Relations Society of America (PRSA) who conducted a communications workshop for FEMA public affairs and management staff at its Washington, D.C. headquarters. The presentation, which included an ethics workshop by West, was broadcast to FEMA's 10 regions across the country. West is the national chair of the PRSA advocacy advisory board.

-- Fall serves as tourism conference keynote speaker
Lisa Fall and her husband, Joe Fall, are keynote speakers at the annual Tennessee Association of Convention and Visitors Bureaus conference hosted this year on Jan. 17-18 at Fall Creek Falls State Park. Lisa will discuss results from her year-long state of Tennessee welcome center survey and provide marketing recommendations for Tennessee destination managers. Joe will discuss recent trends - including culinary and agri-tourism - and their relevance to Tennessee.

-- Mehra presents work at ALISE conference
Bharat Mehra presented two papers, "Integrating Socially Relevant Projects and Achieving Meaningful Community Outcomes in Required Library and Information Science Courses: From a Service Model to Community Engagement" and "Applications of Community-Based Action Research in Elective Courses: Partnering Library and Information Science Students with Underserved Populations to Meet their Information Technology Needs," (co-authored with Robert Sandusky) at the Association for Library and Information Science Education (ALISE) annual conference, held Jan. 8-11 in Philadelphia. Mehra also served on a conference panel, where he presented "Cross-Cultural Learning Process of LIS International Doctoral Students."

CENTER FOR INFORMATION AND COMMUNICATION STUDIES
-- Center submits two more grant proposals
The Center for Information and Communication Studies submitted two grant proposals in late December on behalf of faculty members. The Intercultural Leadership Toolkit for Library and Information Professionals, led by the School of Information Sciences in partnership with the University of Puerto Rico, would provide tools to address the needs of many cultures. The proposal was submitted by Suzie Allard, Bharat Mehra, Ed Cortez, and Michelle Violanti. The second proposal, Public Library Leaders for the 21st Century (PUBLIC), meets a need for public librarians with interdisciplinary competencies through internship/practice in public libraries, graduate instruction, and curriculum support. The proposal was submitted by Bharat Mehra and Ben Bates.

-- Hoy's work presented at Cross Cultural Research Conference
"A Comparative Perspective of Online Disclosure Presentation from Web Sites in United States and Singapore," by May O. Lwin, Nanyang Technological University, and Mariea Grubbs Hoy was presented Thursday, Dec. 13 at the Cross Cultural Research Conference in Honolulu.
-- Student earns highest individual honor from collegiate public relations society
Leslie Street, a senior in public relations, was one of 18 Public Relations Student Society of America (PRSSA) members honored with a National Gold Key Award at the PRSSA 2007 National Conference in Philadelphia. The award is the highest individual honor bestowed upon members of the organization. PRSSA is a pre-professional public relations organization with more than 9,600 members and 289 chapters at colleges and universities in 43 states and the District of Columbia.

COMMUNICATION STUDIES
-- Five students earn honors in McClung Public Speaking Contest
Four hundred people attended the final round of the annual McClung Speaking Contest on Monday, Nov. 26 in Cox Auditorium in the Alumni Memorial Building. Five finalists - Jacob Feuer, Stephanie Paluda, Haylee Cook, Cody Richardson, and Brandon Lawson - competed for the title, which was won by Feuer. More than 800 students were eligible to participate in the contest during the fall 2007 semester
-- Communication studies students raise $3,500 for scholarship fund
Approximately 100 students, family, faculty, and friends participated in the Nathan Boals Memorial Walk held Sunday, Dec. 2, in Circle Park. The goal of the event, sponsored by the Communication Studies Club and the School of Communication Studies, was to raise funds for a scholarship in Boals' memory. Participants raised more than $3,500 for the scholarship fund and more than 20 local organizations contributed to the walk.

JOURNALISM AND ELECTRONIC MEDIA
-- Clark to discuss "becoming an outsider" as part of conference panel
The Society for the Interdisciplinary Study of Social Imagery has accepted the panel "Strangers in Strange Lands: Becoming the Outsider," featuring Naeemah Clark and professors from the University of North Florida and Louisiana State University. Clark will discuss "Crossing the Mason-Dixon Line: Southerners as Outsiders." The conference will be held in March 2008.
-- JEM student earns Dow Jones Editing Internship
Shannon Petrie, a senior Journalism and Electronic Media major, has been named one of Dow Jones' Editing Interns for summer 2008. The program selects only 50 students nationally each year based on a qualifying test, resume, and essay. Petrie will be working for Scripps Networks/HGTV to help launch a new network. This is the school's fifth Dow Jones editor in a row.

-- Faculty members submit two grant proposals
Three CCI faculty members have recently submitted new project grant proposals. Peiling Wang, along with Jian Huang of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, submitted a grant proposal to the National Science Foundation (NSF) to collect, visualize, and analyze real-world data of active learners' learning process of complex software systems. Sally McMillan and Ed Cortez submitted a grant proposal to the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) to offer a comprehensive approach to recruiting, educating, and developing communication-savvy and culturally-aware library leaders.

-- Interdisciplinary Graduate Minor in Computational Science (IGMCS) debuts in spring 2008
Computational modeling and simulation have become indispensable tools in nearly every field of science and engineering today. But to learn how to use these tools well, students must follow a course of study that cuts across the traditional curriculum in a non-traditional way. UT's new Interdisciplinary Graduate Minor in Computational Science (IGMCS) offers students an opportunity to acquire the knowledge and skills they need to practice these methods and put them to work in their careers. -- College invites prospective master's program students to open house
Prospective master's program students considering study in advertising, communication studies, journalism and electronic media, or public relations are invited to an open house at the College of Communication and Information on Jan. 18, 2008. The event will include program overviews, lunch with current students and faculty, and a tour of facilities. Registration will begin at 9:30 a.m. in the third-floor lobby of the building.
-- Tenopir receives two awards
Carol Tenopir, director of the Center for Information and Communication Studies and director of research for the college, has been awarded the Contributions to Information Science and Technology Award by the Los Angeles Chapter of the American Society for Information Science and Technology. The award goes each year to information science educators and practitioners recognized as exceptional leaders whose dedication, commitment and vision inspire others, or whose contribution to information science has been significant. Tenopir also recently received the Whittier College Alumni Achievement Award at the college's annual Poet Awards. She earned her bachelor's degree from Whittier.
