Kunka Ignatova, Bulgaria, Ph.D health Comm

Originally from Bulgaria, Kunka came to the University in Tennessee in 2000 where she obtained a Master's degree in public relations two years later. She then continued her graduate work in the College of Communication and Information, and is expected to graduate with a PhD degree in health communication in May 2007. She is also a Research Associate at the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education where she contributes to various project for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in Atlanta and other public health agencies. Her research interests includes in the area of health communication; agenda setting and framing of health issues; health communication technologies. Her dissertation focuses on U.S. media framing of the bird flu virus and the potential pandemic from the time when the virus first appeared in 1996 until the end of flu season 2005-2006. A follow up project will engage in a comparative study of avian flu coverage in U.S. and Chinese press (China is where the virus originated), looking at cultural characteristics evident in coverage.

Alla Kushniryk, Ukraine

Alla is a student in Communication Studies, minor in Statistics.
Master's degree in Linguistics. Her research areas are: communication with technology, organizational communication, and language in communication. She currently teaches Public speaking, Sociolinguistics, English as a Second Language. After getting a degree I would like to teach in the University. I also would like to go to some (other than Ukraine and USA) country to have more international experience in teaching and research. The best from living in Knoxville..... much warmer than in Ukraine :-)

Bernardo Motta, Brazil Bernardo

Bernardo is a doctoral student in Journalism and Electronic Media. Bernardo has experienced both as an environtmental journalist and a lawyer. His research interests are in environmental communication, international and political journalism, community communication, communication for sustainable development, history of communication and journalism ethics. Bernardo currently teaches Media in Brazil. Besides, he has a project in the implementation of an Environmental Communication Program that will help educate better communication and information professionals, ameliorate environmental conditions in East Tennessee, and improve environmental awareness in schools and communities all around the state.

Renata Mariano Motta, BrazilRenata

Renata is a a master's student in Journalism and Electronic Media. She is interested in entertainment, culture and environmental issues. In the future, she plans to work in broadcasting or magazines.

 

Simon Aristeguieta-Trillos, Venezuela Simon

Simon is a second year PhD student in the School of Information Sciences at the University of Tennessee. He holds a BA in sociology from the University of California, Berkeley and MIS from the University of Puerto Rico. His research interests are scientific information and bibliometrics. While working in Venezuela, he coordinated the scientific journal program in the Science and Technology Department and implemented SciELO (Scientific Electronic Library on Line), LATINDEX (Latin-American electronic index platform) and CVLAC (CVs academic database). Simon loves photography. In the future, he plans to work as a professor, teaching scientometrics in a university.
