EURCA IS BACK
So what is EURCA?
EURCA stands for the "Exhibition of Undergraduate Research and Creative Achievement." Essentially, it is an event for undergraduate students who want to place their research or creative projects in a competition against other undergraduates' work. Teams could win up to $400 or more!!!!! Oh, mama! This year's event will be held at the UT Center Ballroom on April 2 - 4.
Remember, this event is about displaying research or creative work that you have generated as an undergraduate here at UT. Typically, students work with faculty advisors in helping them prepare and display their work on poster boards for the exhibition. I have poster boards for all interested students.
How do you participate? Incredibly easy. Simply fill out an "Intent to Participate" form located at the web site below and turn it in to me by Wednesday, March 5. You can also get a form from your faculty advisor. It is so easy, and the form only takes about 157 seconds to fill out. You can send it to me at dhaygood@utk.edu . Or you can bring it to my office at Room 401E in the famous Student Services/Communications Building.
The next step will be to complete and submit a simple, one-page abstract by Thursday, March 13. Again, participants would send that form to me. Then, all that is left is to prepare your exhibit and set it up on April 2 in the UT Ballroom. That is it.
So, where can you get more information? You have two choices. You may go to www.utk.edu/ugresearch and click on the link for "Exhibition of Undergraduate Research and Creative Achievement." This site contains all the details about the competition. Or you may contact me at 865-974-1960 or dhaygood@utk.edu .
Thank you very much. Go Vols! Dan Haygood

EURCA Sponsors Screening of "Orca: The Killer Whale"
EURCA is offering a viewing of the strangely enlightening film, "Orca: The Killer Whale" to all interested students and faculty of the College of Communication and Information. The screening will be held on Thursday, February 28 at 5:15pm, in Room #208 of the Communications Building. The screening is free of charge.
Made in the 1977, "Orca" has all the elements of a stunningly cheesy film from that highly creative and culturally rich era of the late 1970s. Featuring Richard Harris, Charlotte Rampling, and a very young Bo Derek, "Orca: The Killer Whale" explores the internal and external conflicts between a New England whaling village and animal rights advocates over the whales' right to exist without being hunted for food and other products. Actually, the movie is about a whale who gets really upset when his baby whale and wife whale are killed by fisherman, and then the daddy whale goes off on a killing spree in the village. No, really, that is what the movie is about.
Oh, and we will answer any questions that students and faculty may have about the Exhibition of Undergraduate Research and Creative Achievement.
I look forward to seeing you all there. Dan Haygood

We can take 24 students this year. The trip is open to UT Ad Club members first.
Costs per person are estimated as follows:
Hotel and Airfare package............................................ $759.00
Meals - 6 days at $30/day .............................................. 180.00
Surface transportation (taxi, bus, subway) ...................... 60.00
TOTAL ESTIMATED COST . ...................................... $999.00*
(*Non-Ad Club Members add $50.00 and make separate check to UT/AAF Chapter)
To register for this trip you need to sign the bottom of this letter, fill out the attached form and return both to Dr.Haley with your payment of $759.00 for your hotel and airfare package by Noon, October 10, 2006. If all spots are not taken by Ad Club members, the remaining spots will be made available to non-members. Non-members will be put on a waiting list and unfilled spots will be filled based on the order in which non-members names appear on the list. Payment options are explained on the registration form. The rest of the money will be whatever you take with you in January. Trip reservations are first-come, first served. If we fill up before Oct. 10th, then we fill up! Put all the above in Dr. Haley’s hands!
Food estimate is an average. Reasonable coffee shops and fast food restaurants are close to the hotel. Entertainment, shopping, dining in "fine" restaurants are a matter of individual taste and will move the food cost and the pocket money to a higher amount. Room costs do not include phone calls or any extra room charges. These will be your responsibility and must be paid for prior to checkout by you.
Most appointments are within walking distance of the hotel. Transportation estimate tries to include free-time excursions, and should be on the high side, especially if you make use of the subway system.
Considering that the price includes five nights at a midtown Manhattan hotel, this is a reasonable cost for a trip that could be an invaluable investment in your career. Contact Dr. Haley (haley@utk.edu) for further information.
I understand that this is a voluntary extracurricular activity. In case of mishap, change in itinerary, trip cancellation or accident, neither the UT College of Communication and Information, The University of Tennessee, the School of Advertising and Public Relations, the UT Ad Club, nor the faculty escorts can be held responsible. Also, once paid, I understand that refunds cannot be given.

ANNOUNCING AN EXCLUSIVE INTERNSHIP OPPORTUNITY FOR UT ADVERTISING STUDENTS!
PUBLICIS USA will be offering a paid internship to a UT advertising student in either account management or account planning for this upcoming summer in the New York office.
PUBLICIS is a major multinational advertising agency, headquartered in Paris, France. The CEO of PUBLICIS USA is none other than UT advertising graduate Gill Duff. Mr. Duff or a designated PUBLICIS representative will conduct interviews this January during our annual NYC trip.
The internship is open to Juniors and Seniors (yes, even graduating seniors.) The HR people at PUBLICIS look on the internship program as an extended 8-week interview and will hire their interns when positions open up!
The PUBLICIS internship program is a very well-organized 8-week program that begins in June. You can read about the program at the PUBLICIS USA website, www.Publicis-usa.com. Then go to "people," then to "intern program." Last year, current UT advertising senior Ashley Butturini was selected for this program.
TO APPLY, HERE'S WHAT YOU NEED TO DO:
Prepare an application consisting of a one-page resume and a cover letter. The cover letter should specify the internship for which you are applying (account management or account planning). The letter should communicate why you want to work in advertising, why you want to work in account management or account planning, why your want to work at Publicis, and should communicate something about your personality.
Address the letter to: Mark Zangrilli, Publicis USA, 4 Herald Square, 950 6th Avenue, New York, NY 10001
TURN IN ALL MATERIALS TO DR. HALEY - Do not send materials directly to Publicis. Publicis has asked that UT screen the applicants and forward the best 4 or 5 to Publicis for January interviews.
Deadline for applications is Tuesday, October 10th, 2006. Please deliver to Dr. Haley, 476 Communications. Any questions should be addressed to haley@utk.edu
Date: September 7, 2006
To: Ad Faculty/Staff, Student Ad Club, and Ad Students
Re: Paid Internship Opportunity - Young & Rubicam, NY
For the twelth year, the UT advertising program is seeking applications for a paid internship at Young & Rubicam, NY, for this upcoming summer. We are fortunate that Y&R has set aside money for a UT advertising student in either account management or account planning. This opportunity was created by former UT students who worked at Y&R. In the past, Jeff Winger, Kevin Kirksey, Nicole McPhillips, Chad Hauther, Emily Adams, Andrew Renfro, Nancy Sloan, Natasha Massey, Tania Ventolini, Shibhan Singh, Stephanie Shaw and Rachael Bell were selected as the Y&R intern. Each has been offered a permanent job with Y&R. Others, like Marc Loffredo, have been asked to come back to interview for permanent positions as a result of interviewing for the internship. Like Jeff, Kevin and Nicole, Marc was also offered a permanent position. Y&R has been very impressed with Jeff, Kevin, Marc, Nicole and other UT students that have worked for them; therefore, they are giving us this opportunity again this year.
To be eligible:
You must be an Ad major, a Junior or at least have one semester until graduation after this upcoming summer.
You must have a passion for advertising.
You must be willing to be interviewed in person by Y&R NY. In the past, the students that Y&R selected to interview also went on the January NYC trip and were interviewed then. If not already signed up for the January trip, see Dr. Haley

REMINDER: Spring advising sessions will be held on Tuesday, March 14, in Room 208. Public relations student advising is at 3:30 p.m. and advertising student advising is at 4:15 p.m. School faculty members advise all students to attend an advising session each semester although the University requires you to be advised only one time each year.
SUMMER AND MINITERM REGISTRATION opened this past Monday, March 6. So far there is no enrollment in advertising or public relations courses. If you plan to attend summer school, you need to "cast your vote" for a class to be held by registering for that class. Courses not reaching a minimum enrollment of 12 by mid-April will be canceled.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
SEVERAL CHANGES HAVE BEEN MADE IN THE FALL SCHEDULE. Changes include cancelling one section of Adv 310, canceling one section of Adv 480, cancelling one section of PR 320, and moving one section of Adv 350 from TR to MW.
If you were enrolled in any of the cancelled sections, you should have received an email alerting you to the change. There is plenty of room in other sections to accommodate students who were signed up for sections that have been cancelled. Sections were cancelled due to low enrollments.
If you are having difficulty scheduling an advertising or public relations class, you should send an email to adv@utk.edu. So far it appears that all fully admitted majors have been registered into the classes they need for fall semester.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
GOOD LUCK to all students in the School of Advertising and Public Relations during exam week. Exams run Wednesday through Tuesday.
CONGRATULATIONS to the 77 seniors who will graduate from the School on Friday, May 12. Remember the graduation rehearsal at 2 p.m. on Thursday, May 11, McClung Museum Auditorium.

A PAID, RETAIL ADVERTISING INTERNSHIP for summer is still available at the Knoxville News-Sentinel. If you are an advertising major and have completed
Adv 360 (Media Strategy), you are eligible to apply. Graduate students are eligible, too. Just drop off a copy of your resume and brief letter NO LATER THAN 2 P.M. THIS WEDNESDAY, MAY 3. Address your letter to Dr. Ron Taylor and deliver it to 476 Com. Bldg.
