Augie Grant is J. Rion McKissick Professor of Journalism in the School of Journalism and Mass Communications and is Newsplex Academic Liaison for the University of South Carolina. Grant is a former broadcaster who is on permanent leave from the broadcasting industry to teach and conduct research on the telecommunication industries. After completing his doctorate at the Annenberg School at the University of Southern California, he spent nine years with the Department of Radio-Television-Film at the University of Texas at Austin. He then became founding Director of the Center for Mass Communication Research in the College of Journalism and Mass Communications at the University of South Carolina. During the Internet boom, he took two years off from teaching to be Director of Market Research and Entertainment Services for Silicon-Valley-based 2Wire, Inc. Although Grant's primary interest is mass communication technology, his research and teaching reflects the convergence of communication forms through the application of new technologies. He has written numerous articles and conference papers dealing with high-definition television, television audience behavior, television shopping services, theories of new media, and emerging communication technologies. He is coauthor of Principles of Convergent Journalism, and the editor of the Communication Technology Update (now in its thirteenth edition), a semi-annual review of the latest developments in more than two dozen technologies in electronic mass media, telephony, consumer electronics, computers, and satellites. He is also a consultant to various media organizations regarding new communication technologies and consumer behavior, serving as Chief Content Strategist for 1World Online and Senior Consultant for Focus 25 Research and Consulting.
